Tips to Getting Started
Tips
Apply yourself to the mastery of your instrument. Take your time through this process. Singing is a highly specialized skill. The muscle coordination required to perform dynamically at a professional level takes time to develop. Move at a pace that is comfortable and consistent. Consistency is so much better than perfection. We are developing awareness in our bodies that will dramatically improve our voices.
It is so much better to feel good rather than sound good within lessons. We are pivoting our awareness from measuring the quality of the sound, to measuring the quality of our experience within our bodies. We never want to judge ourselves as we study voice. We must give ourselves permission to freely experience our voice, and notice what we notice in our bodies. And yes, that goes for when we sound bad too. We are truly embracing our voice, our sound and our identity as artists. This type of self awareness will make us much smarter singers, because we will truly be able to understand our instrument.
Right away we are supporting an attitude of “letting go” in lessons. We are releasing any tension that we may feel in the body as a result of how we feel about our sound. We are also releasing emotional tension caused by the need to sound good, to protect, to emote or to live up to a standard we’ve created for ourselves. We are letting go of these tendencies to control our experience of expression. When we stay selfishly focused in a performance our body becomes tense, our throat closes and our performances become one dimensional.
